Travis Kelce’s new three-year, $54.7 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs may not be as straightforward as it first appears, with the structure suggesting a much smaller immediate payout.

The headline figure has drawn attention, but the details reveal a very different financial picture.

It also raises questions about how long Kelce will actually remain under the deal.

Travis Kelce’s Chiefs contract structure explained by Ari Meirov

NFL expert Ari Meirov on X broke down how Travis Kelce’s deal is structured despite its reported total value.

“The Chiefs’ new contract with TE Travis Kelce is structured as a 1-year, $12M deal with another $3M in incentives, with additional years included for cap purposes,” Meirov wrote.

He added: “If Kelce wants to continue playing after this season, the deal will be renegotiated next year. As currently structured, it’s set up for this to be his final season, after which he would retire, allowing the cap hits to be spread out over those added years.”

The structure means Kelce is effectively playing on a short-term deal, with the larger figure primarily designed for salary cap flexibility.

It also leaves the door open for a renegotiation depending on his future plans.

Travis Kelce’s actual earnings clarified

Meirov added further clarity, explaining why the total value of Travis Kelce’s contract does not reflect guaranteed earnings.

“For context and clarity, Travis Kelce’s contract with the Chiefs includes a trigger date next June that exists strictly for cap purposes,” Meirov continued.

The NFL expert concluded: “He does not actually have another two years and $40M+ coming to him after this season.”

This clarification confirms that the additional years are largely technical rather than a firm financial commitment.

It reinforces the idea that the deal is structured around flexibility rather than long-term guarantees. As a result, Kelce’s immediate earnings remain significantly lower than the headline figure suggests.
