Why Tottenham’s reported interest in Samuel Umtiti makes little sense right now

Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of impressive options at centre-back both for now and for the future.

According to a recent report from French newspaper L’Equipe, Tottenham Hotspur are very interested in Lyon centre-back Samuel Umtiti and are preparing a summer bid for the 22-year-old.

It is being claimed Spurs have been keeping a very close eye on the defender and after allegedly testing the water a bid is imminent.

While Tottenham fans will be focused on their ongoing title challenge for the rest of the current campaign, they will then move their attention to who the club could sign this summer in a bid to continue the superb work carried out by manager Mauricio Pochettino thus far.

The problem with the Umtiti rumours is that Tottenham do not, and arguably will not, need him any time soon.

After all, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are the undisputed first-choice centre-back pairing at White Hart Lane, while Kevin Wimmer has proved to be a superb deputy when called upon this season.

Of course Tottenham will need more than three quality centre-backs moving forward, which is why the presence of Eric Dier to act as cover and the emergence of Cameron Carter-Vickers are other big reasons why a summer move for Umtiti seems unlikely.

Carter-Vickers is regarded as one of the best teenagers not only in Tottenham’s academy but in the entire country and next season could be the one when he starts to make his breakthrough at the club.

Umtiti’s arrival will only reduce that chance and for that reason, among many others, it would be surprising if Pochettino did ultimately sign the France under-21 international.
