According to a recent report from French newspaper Le Parisien AS Monaco want £51million for Kylian Mbappe this summer, and while that is a considerable fee, alleged suitors Tottenham Hotspur would be wise to bid.

It is easy to look at such a sizeable price tag and immediately rule out a side like Tottenham, whose chairman Daniel Levy has often proved frugal in the transfer market.

But he is also a businessman who understands how the best young footballers in the game could make a tidy sum in an increasingly inflated market.

What costs £51million in 2017 could cost double that in five years, such is the craziness of football transfers these days, and when you consider Levy sanctioned a £30million deal for Moussa Sissoko last summer and previously splurged on Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado, a significant bid for Mbappe is not as farfetched as first thought.

Then there is the fact that Mbappe is the real deal; an 18-year-old attacker who has taken France by storm this season and proved in the Champions League against Manchester City that he has what it takes to tear English defences apart.

Already this season Mbappe has scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 26 appearances, and his ability to play up front and on both wings means he would be perfect for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side.

With the Mirror claiming Tottenham hold real interest in the teenager, Levy will have to decide if he is worth the outlay. But having missed out on other exciting teenagers who have already proved their worth – such as Anthony Martial and Ousmane Dembele – surely the time is right for Spurs to bid big.
