Tottenham Hotspur passed up the opportunity to sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham, which allowed Celtic to snap up the striker.
Tottenham Hotspur may live to regret their decision to opt against completing a deal for Moussa Dembele last January, if the striker continues his current form for Celtic and France.
Tottenham looked set to bring in Dembele from Fulham at the start of 2016, but they decided against doing a deal at the last minute (The Independent).
Spurs did not want to loan Dembele back to Fulham for six months, and the Championship side would not agree to the deal without that clause included.
In the end, Celtic took advantage. The Bhoys brought in Dembele on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract, and the 20-year-old has began the season in wonderful form.
Dembele has notched 16 goals for Celtic already, and he has managed to score against the likes of Manchester City and Barcelona in the Champions League.
The youngster has also netted three goals in his first two appearances for France’s under-21 side, with his reputation quickly developing.
Manchester United are one of the clubs who have sent scouts to Celtic Park recently, to look at the prospect.
With Vincent Janssen badly struggling for Tottenham since signing, Mauricio Pochettino’s side still have a lack of cover for Harry Kane, and their decision to not sign Dembele looks like a major error.
Tottenham would now have to pay a hefty price tag, and battle a huge amount of competition if they did want to bring Dembele in – meaning it looks like they have missed their opportunity and it could prove to be a costly mistake in both the short-term and the long-term for Pochettino’s side.
Tottenham’s failure to find suitable back-up for Harry Kane has been highlighted in recent weeks, with the 22-year-old injured.
Spurs have not won any of their last seven matches, and they have only scored four times over that period of time.
Although Kane is making his comeback now, Tottenham certainly seem to have a lack of depth in the striking department, and that could prove costly as they fight for the title.
More concerning, though, is that Dembele looks to have the potential to become one of Europe’s most lethal front man, and his arrival at White Hart Lane would have added yet another exciting prospect to a team filled with talented, young players.
