A sell on clause could cause Manchester United big problems and play into Tottenham Hotspur’s hands.
Tottenham Hotspur have been given a big boost in their pursuit of Anthony Martial, who The Telegraph report is their top target.
His agent told RMC Sport last night: “After looking at all the possibilities and different factors, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United. Anthony simply wants to play, enjoy football again. The feeling with the manager will be essential.”
If United are pressured into selling, normally they would push for a bidding war, which could eventually rule Tottenham out.
With Martial, thanks to a clause in his contract, that is not the case.
But this is a clause which is only activated if Martial is sold between 60 million Euros and 100 million Euros.
This means United would have to sell for under 60 million Euros (£53 million) in order to receive 100 per cent of the transfer fee.
Martial is supremely talented, but with just two years left on his current deal, his market value is not strong enough to be pushed above the 100 milion Euro mark (£88m), meaning United would have to cash in below £53m.
For Tottenham, whose transfer record is £42 million, this is potentially significant, especially if they raise cash by selling Toby Alderweireld for a similar amount.
A straight swap with United seems even more logical than it did before.
