Much has been said about Sunderland so far this season, but regardless they still won’t fall to the depths of Derby County.
When thinking about the worst teams in Premier League history, Sunderland and Derby County are the two sides that often spring to mind. With both teams making up the bottom three in terms of lowest ever points totals, it begs the question of what in the world they were doing in the 38-game season that went oh so wrong. Thankfully for this season’s Black Cats side, they still do not seem bad enough to break the Rams’ all-time low.
First off, this start to the campaign could end up being a blessing in disguise. With just two points to their name the warning signs are there already, meanwhile Derby were not quite aware of the scale of their failures as they had accumulated five points by this stage. It may seem odd, but the crippling disappointment of the first few months could be the catalyst for change.
Then you have the talent pool in the managerial department. In terms of getting a side out of trouble, there’s a whole host of unemployed gaffers out there that can turn the ship around should David Moyes get the sack.

If you compare that to Derby who were guided by the likes of Billy Davies and Paul Jewell, it makes for good reading if you are a Sunderland fan.
If you look at the quality within the divisions at their respective times, some of the sides around Sunderland are just as weak in terms of quality and getting results. It should not be too difficult to rack up three or four wins over the course of the season, especially considering their track record for pulling off great escapes.
Whilst Sunderland have not been in a situation as dire as this before, they certainly know how to drag themselves out of the abyss and that is exactly what they will do once again. Either way, even if they do not survive, Derby’s record will remain untarnished.
