The Aston Villa midfielder looks set to leave this summer but he has the talent to still make an impact in the top flight.
According to a recent report from French newspaper L’Equipe, Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout has decided to leave the club this summer following their relegation from the Premier League.
The report claims clubs in his homeland, Spain and England are all interested in the 23-year-old and while it remains to be seen what his preference is Sunderland would be wise to chance their hand with a bid.
The Black Cats impressed with their dealings during the January transfer window, signing a trio of stars who all played a significant role in their climb to safety in the final few months of the campaign.
Now it is up to Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce to take his side to the next level, and while on the face of it signing a player from a relegated rival may smack of foolishness, Veretout is far better than last season suggests.
The 23-year-old would bring down the average age of Sunderland’s midfield while also offering them the class he showed only in glimpses at Villa Park.
It was no surprise that when Villa signed the Frenchman from Nantes the switch allegedly left a number of Premier League rivals disappointed.
In hindsight the midfielder made the wrong move, but if he feels he has unfinished business in the English top flight then a switch to Sunderland would allow him to feature regularly and become something of a club great on Wearside.
That is mere speculation of course, yet Veretout did not lose his class overnight and with 12 goals and 23 assists to his name in France he should not be cast out of English football so soon.
