Sunderland and Aston Villa will both be attempting to compete for promotion in the Championship next season.

According to The Sun, David Moyes wants to change Sunderland’s entire first-team squad this summer.

Moyes recently met with Sunderland chairman Ellis Short to discuss the terms of him staying on at the Stadium of Light.

And one of Moyes’ demands is said to be that he wants to be given the transfer freedom to bring in an entire new starting line-up at Sunderland.

The Black Cats boss believes they need an entirely new team to earn promotion straight back from the Championship.

But Moyes only needs to look at Aston Villa’s failings to show that his transfer strategy may not be the most astute one.

Villa went down and invested heavily over the summer and in January to attempt to earn promotion.

However, Villa’s squad looked unsettled over the early part of the season, and after the January window – with their poor form over these months ultimately proving costly.

The claret and blues have never threatened the promotion spots, and it was actually the teams that promoted stability which performed far better.

Newcastle United didn’t make wholesale changes to their team after dropping into the Championship, and earned promotion.

It was a similar story at Brighton & Hove Albion, who made just a few alterations before mounting a successful campaign.

And if Sunderland do plan to make a vast amount of changes in the summer – things may get worse before they get better, if Villa’s season is anything to go by.
