Carlos Alcaraz fell to Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Miami Open, continuing a difficult stretch that also saw him lose to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals just weeks earlier.

For the second year running, Alcaraz came up short of titles in both legs of the ‘Sunshine Double’.

On a recent episode of ‘Nothing Major‘, Steve Johnson offered his take on why Alcaraz continues to struggle at these two events.

Johnson gave his view on how Alcaraz played at Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

“[Carlos] Alcaraz did not seem like himself yesterday,” said Johnson.

“This is kind of strange because last year he had the same hiccup for him in the Sunshine Double.

“He did not play well at either Indian Wells or Miami, and then he kind of does the same this year.

“So maybe there are too many extracurriculars for Carlos off the court.

“I don’t know… just during Indian Wells and Miami, I know he was playing golf every day.

Alcaraz took a break from tennis following his Australian Open triumph, skipping Rotterdam to focus on recovery and pre-season training in Spain. In February 2025, he officially announced his decision to miss the event to prioritise rest and preparation.

Alcaraz was nearly unbeatable on clay last season

Alcaraz was nearly perfect on clay in 2025. The Spaniard won 22 of the 23 matches he played, only losing to Holger Rune in Barcelona while carrying an injury.

He’ll be looking to stay fit throughout the 2026 clay swing and possibly go one better by finishing the season unbeaten.

His campaign will kick off at the Monte-Carlo Masters, which gets underway on Monday, April 6th.
