Why Spurs should make exception in Rose to Manchester United deal

Manchester United up Danny Rose pursuit but Tottenham don’t want to sell to them – however, is there a case for making an exception?

The ongoing transfer saga linking Danny Rose to Manchester United has been given an update by the Sun, who claim the Red Devils will step up their pursuit for the Tottenham Hotspur left-back in January.

Rose caused controversy over the summer when during an interview with the same newspaper, the 27 year old claimed he would consider moving back north to win more trophies and criticised Spurs’ transfer policy and wage structure.

At the time the defender was absent with a knee injury and Ben Davies filled his role admirably, although the England international has recently returned and made three appearances in all competitions.

However, the emergence of Davies has hinted that like with Kyle Walker on the opposite flank, Tottenham can cope without someone who has been considered one of their key players.

Club chairman Daniel Levy does not want to sell to a direct rival in United, but then if he can get £45m plus add-ons (BBC) for the full-back as he did for Walker from Manchester City (another direct rival), does it become more tempting?

Also, the prospect of Luke Shaw coming the other way in a potential cut-price deal having been ostracised at Old Trafford by manager Jose Mourinho, as has been rumoured, could add to the case for Levy making an exception in this scenario.

Shaw is five years Rose’s junior, came through the ranks at Southampton under current Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and is a great admirer of the Argentine, and still has time to realise his potential of being one of the most talented young English players – something Pochettino has a great track record in overseeing.

Of course Levy wants to stand firm when it comes to Man United, but for a shrewd businessman this could turn out to be a superb deal if negotiated right.
