Could Sheffield United’s history of promoting League One players give them the edge over Leeds in pursuit of Shrewsbury’s Jon Nolan?

A host of Championship clubs are reported to be tracking Shrewsbury Town midfielder Jon Nolan by the Shropshire Star.

Sunderland are the latest side to join the chase, with Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Norwich City and Sheffield United having already shown interest.

Nolan has been in fine form for the Shrews since joining from Chesterfield last summer, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in 37 League One matches to help them to their surprise current position at the top of the table.

Does Wilder gives Blades the edge?

Shrewsbury could well be playing in the second tier of English football themselves next season, but even if they are promoted the 25-year-old is likely to be tempted by some of those keen on signing him.

Leeds are arguably the biggest name and the side the likeliest to mount a promotion push to the Premier League next term, yet what could give their Sheffield rivals the edge over them and the other interested parties is manager Chris Wilder.

After winning the League One title last year Wilder has since signed five players from the division this time around in George Baldock, Ricky Holmes, Ryan Leonard, John Lundstram and Enda Stevens, with all of them enjoying varying degrees of game time.

The 50-year-old has proven that he is prepared to put his trust in players who may not already have experience in England’s second tier and for that reason Nolan could perhaps favour a switch to Bramall Lane.
