Scottie Scheffler shot a second-round 65 at the WM Phoenix Open on Friday, extending his cut streak to 66 straight events.
Scheffler looked much sharper in his second round after starting with a 73 on Thursday.
Even though he’s yet to find top form, Scheffler is still within reach of the leaders as the weekend gets underway.
He made a grip change after the opening round, which seemed to make an immediate difference as he shaved eight strokes off his score from day one.
Scheffler’s ball-striking numbers are down this week. Through two rounds, he sits 40th in strokes gained off the tee and 37th in approach at TPC Scottsdale.
Last month, TaylorMade launched their latest driver, the Qi4D. Scheffler gave it a try during The American Express but quickly reverted to his familiar Qi10 after just one round.
Based on his recent comments, it doesn’t look like he’ll be making that change anytime soon.
After his second round in Phoenix on Friday, Scheffler was asked about his decision to continue using the older model over the new release.
Scottie Scheffler has yet to feel comfortable using the Qi4D driver
Scheffler put TaylorMade’s new driver through its paces during the off-season, and the numbers on paper looked good.
He picked up 3.3 mph in ball speed and added six yards of carry distance, but it still wasn’t enough for him to make the switch.
The hesitation appears to come down to his feel for shot dispersion, rather than raw numbers. And when Scheffler isn’t completely confident in a club, he doesn’t make the change lightly.
Scheffler has always been careful about what goes into his bag. He won’t put the Qi4D in play until he’s absolutely sure it matches his expectations.
