Leeds United are believed to be considering making an approach for Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone.
Leeds United fans have been left disappointed after David Stockdale signed for Birmingham City, but they could have their eyes on a better deal.
Stockdale had been a free agent, following the expiration of his contract at Brighton & Hove Albion, and many Leeds supporters wanted the Whites to bring the 31-year-old to Elland Road.
Stockdale is a Leeds fan, and it was thought that a move to the Yorkshire club would have appealed to the reliable goalkeeper.
However, Birmingham swooped, with Leeds still looking for a new manager to take over.
The mood around Elland Road has been one of frustration, after missing out on the chance to sign Stockdale.
However, Leeds are reportedly considering making a move for Manchester United stopper Sam Johnstone (TeamTalk) – and he would be an even better addition.
Johnstone is seven years Stockdale’s junior, and Leeds could plan to build their side around the United youngster for the years ahead.
Johnstone also has the potential to develop into a superior goalkeeper than Stockdale.
While Stockdale may have been the Championship’s best stopper over the past season, Johnstone was in excellent form at Aston Villa and he already looks capable of performing in the second tier.
If Johnstone continues to develop, then he looks destined to play in the Premier League sooner rather than later – and if Leeds could bring him to Elland Road, then it would be a statement of intent from them ahead of the new campaign.
