Rio Ferdinand recalls the unexpected moment he addressed the President of the United States, Donald Trump, at the FIFA World Cup draw.

As a footballer, life after leaving the beautiful game can take you to some unexpected places, whether that be through punditry, coaching, or any other career path.

But former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand never imagined that one day he’d be addressing the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Rio Ferdinand’s surreal encounter with President Donald Trump

Speaking candidly, Rio Ferdinand reflected on the experience of meeting Donald Trump in an interview on Manchester United’s YouTube channel.

“It was quite a surreal moment, I’ll be honest with you,” he said. “You don’t ever anticipate, growing up, that you’re going to meet the President of America, and you’re going to address him while hosting an event that he is at. Quite surreal. But a great experience… To be a part of it was really good.”

The encounter showed a more personal side to Ferdinand — a man used to high-pressure sporting moments but still humbled by the scale of that occasion.

His words captured the mixture of honour and disbelief that often comes when athletes find themselves in spaces they never expected.

Rio Ferdinand rarely been starstruck in the football world

For Rio Ferdinand, who spent two decades at the top of English football, this moment marked another kind of achievement.

One not defined by medals or matches, but by recognition beyond the sport. Addressing a world leader was a reminder of how his influence has extended well outside the game.

It also reflected how far footballers have come as cultural figures, able to bridge sport, politics, and community, while also staying close to the game they love so much.

For Ferdinand, it was simply another sign of how his platform continues to open doors — and how moments like that still carry the power to surprise him.
