Rangers should consider bringing the talented Newcastle United teenager to Ibrox on a short-term deal.
Rangers have a history of agreeing loan deals with Newcastle United, with differing levels of success, but the Scottish side would be wise to consider another temporary move for a Magpies player, either in January or next summer.
Sean Longstaff is a 19-year-old attacking midfielder who has been taking Newcastle’s under-23s by storm this season – scoring nine goals in his last 10 outings at that level – and while a move to the Scottish Premiership would be a significant step up, he has the innate talent to excel with the Gers.
With the Magpies having the strongest squad in the Championship, Longstaff is unlikely to make the breakthrough this season, while a seemingly inevitable promotion back to the top flight will also see chances limited for the teenager.
Not so at Rangers, who could do with additional fire-power from the centre of the park as they bid to push Celtic for the title.
Rangers have impressed with their recent business with English clubs and a move for Longstaff would be perfect for all concerned.
It would allow the player to develop under Rangers boss Mark Warburton – a man known for getting the best out of young players – while giving the Scottish club another option.
It would also allow Newcastle to see how Longstaff takes to regular first-team football, with the hope that he would blossom as Adam Armstrong did before him.
Rangers are currently eight points behind Celtic having played three games more, so the prospect of a title surge this season is slim to say the least.
But next season could be another matter, and whenever Longstaff arrived, he would do so with the desire to prove categorically that he has what it takes to succeed both now and ultimately back at Newcastle.
