Today saw Rangers boss Mark Warburton yet again defend the performances of his new signings at Ibrox.

Joey Barton aside, whose problems at the club go beyond just performances, many of Rangers’ summer signings have struggled to produce their best form for the club since arriving in Glasgow.

In his attempt to present a good example of why Rangers fans should not worry – he used a Tottenham Hotspur player as an example.

Speaking to Rangers’ official website Warburton had this to say about his Ibrox recruits:

“I remember [Erik] Lamela coming to Spurs and people saying it took him 12 months to settle in and now he’s producing a fantastic level of football.”

But that argument from the Rangers manager is quite frankly hard to stomach.

Lamela certainly did take time to settle at Spurs. His first season was essentially a write off at White Hart Lane.

But Lamela suffered with a back injury, did not speak the language, suffered from managerial changes and a hefty price-tag – not to mention the fact he was just 21-years-old at the time.

The new signings at Rangers all speak English. Whilst the Glasgow accent can certainly be troublesome, they are at least speaking the same language in their new surroundings. None arrived for £30 million and most have plenty of experience in the game.

To suggest they are in the same boat is Lamela is, frankly laughable.

Warburton is obviously just protecting his Rangers newbies. But fans at Ibrox are tired of excuses and would like to see results and performances improving in the weeks and months to come.
