Paul Merson has questioned why Newcastle United haven’t signed Dan Burn yet, as he expressed his ‘surprise’ at clubs leaving business right until the last minute, as he told Deadline Day on Sky Sports.

The Sky pundit questioned why clubs like Newcastle haven’t done their transfer business earlier, rather than wait until deadline day itself.

Sky Sports have reported that Brighton have accepted a bid from the rich pockets of the Magpies for their hard-hitting centre-back.

The Magpies had to go back in again for the player last week before a bid was accepted, as both clubs seemingly spoke for a few days before striking a deal.

But given the crazy nature of transfer deadline day, Merson shared his thoughts on how clubs go about their work.

“Transfer deadline day just ramps it up and makes it more fun,” said Merson. “It does surprise me we get down to this day.

“You have all month, then it’s a bad panic. Tonight when I will be watching at 10 pm, they will still be rushing things through.

“I think ‘why hasn’t it been done before that?’ We were just talking about the Dan Burn one. You said ‘has it been done? I am not sure’.

“It seems like ‘why hasn’t that been done yet?'”

Only hours remain before the window slams shut and, as expected, Newcastle are the main event.

All eyes were on them before the window opened and they are providing the late drama ahead of the 11pm deadline.

This was always going to be a tricky window for the club because everyone knew they had the money and were desperate to bring in players.

But as the deals are going through, it could be argued that those at the top have done their job and delivered for Eddie Howe.
