Following last night’s disastrous 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Barnsley, fans are already calling for the head of manager Walter Zenga.
A general view before the match
Just a week or two ago everything seemed perfect in the world of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans, but as has been the case for years now there was disappointment right round the corner. Last night’s 4-0 loss to Barnsley proved that there’s still a long way to go for Wolves if they want to challenge for promotion this season.
All four goals came in the final twenty minutes of the match, and after the first two the side seemed to just capitulate. The lack of effort throughout the team was evident, and Barnsley just wanted the win more. If there’s one key thing that Zenga needs to address it’s the passion within the starting XI, especially when things start to go wrong.
However, something that fans need to stop doing is comparing Zenga to Stale Solbakken’s reign. Zenga is more organised, has a better group of players and seems much more focused on the job at hand. The simple fact that he’s cancelled today’s day off in preparation for the Newcastle match indicates that he won’t settle for a mid-table finish this season.
New Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Walter Zenga
There’s also a number of players yet to get their chance to make an impact in the side, with Ola John & Silvio just two examples of new signings who have been left out of the last few matchday squads. Once Zenga is able to find his most consistent starting eleven, that is when Wolves can begin to translate the individual quality that the team possesses into results.
As well as this, people tend to forget about the length of Championship seasons. We’ve seen teams like Burnley and Sunderland in the past few years who have started the year on rotten form, before turning the campaign around and gaining promotion. All it takes in the second tier is a strong run of victories and you’re right back in the hunt for the top six.
Nouha Dicko scores the second goal for Wolves
With players like Jordan Graham and Nouha Dicko also set to return soon, there are even more options that will soon become available to the new manager. Dicko especially has become a fan favourite at Molineux in recent years, and his re-introduction into the setup can only be a positive thing.
When you look at Wolverhampton Wanderers as a whole, they reek of a side with the potential for promotion. As long as they can start to piece things together, fans won’t have anything to worry about come May.
