It’s been nearly 20 years since Ferrari last celebrated a Formula 1 world championship, and the wait continues for their passionate supporters.

In 2008, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen led Ferrari to victory in the constructors’ championship, edging out McLaren and BMW Sauber.

Since then, the tifosi have watched title hopes rise and fall as they waited for a new era of success.

Lewis Hamilton said his appreciation for Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso grew last season after seeing what they had dealt with at Ferrari.

All three world champions have come through Maranello without adding another title to their collections. Hamilton hasn’t even reached the podium yet since joining Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc has long been viewed as a future champion, but he hasn’t had a car capable of challenging at the front.

Mattia Binotto expresses sympathy for Ferrari fans amid ongoing title drought

Speaking to RMC Motori ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Binotto was asked for his thoughts on the current state of Ferrari.

He replied: “Looking back at Ferrari’s past is very difficult for me.

“I am no longer part of the team, I don’t know the dynamics, I don’t know what’s going on, and I can’t judge. I remain a Ferrari fan, I was born a fan, and I continue to be a fan of the red team even though I work on another Audi project.

“I feel sorry for the fans, for the current situation, and I feel especially sorry for all those people I know, with whom I have worked over the years.”

Binotto added: “I know their value within the team. And again, looking from outside it is difficult but certainly some things are missing. And when results are not achieved it is not always because of one reason or one area in particular but because overall you lack something.”

Ferrari entering new era of Formula 1 that could signal a return to the top of the championship

Between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari have a driver pairing capable of fighting for titles.

Hamilton’s recent form may not be what it once was, but he still has seven world championships under his belt. And with the ground-effect era behind us, he’ll back himself to get back into the mix at the front.

Ferrari started shifting focus away from their 2025 car as early as April last year, giving them plenty of time to adapt to F1’s latest regulations.

Questions about Ferrari’s 2026 power unit might be overstated. They could still hold their own against Mercedes-powered teams expected to lead this year’s pack.

The real test will be in aerodynamics. While last year’s rear suspension update missed its mark, there are enough skilled engineers in Maranello to get on top of the new rules this time around.
