Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison has said that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will not be able to sign Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer transfer window.

The former Crystal Palace forward has said on Sky Sports News (12:05pm, May 20, 2023) that Ilkay Gundogan would either stay at Manchester City or move to Barcelona and will not join Arsenal.

The Sky Sports pundit has been hugely impressed by the Germany international, who is playing a big role in the Citizens’ quest to win the treble this season.

Gundogan is out of contract at defending Premier League champions City at the end of the season.

City manager Pep Guardiola has openly said that he wants his bosses at the Etihad Stadium to hand the 32-year-old a new contract.

According to a report in Spanish publication SPORT in March 2023, Arsenal are trying to sign Gundogan on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

The report claimed interest in the £165,000-a-week (SalarySport) German star from Barcelona as well.

Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling posed the question: “Clinton, City want to keep him, but he seems set for Barcelona.

“He has also been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool. Why on earth would he want to leave City for another English club?”

After praising the midfielder, Morrison added: “At the moment, he is one of their best players. He has been outstanding.

“For me, he won’t play in the Premier League for any other club. Only way he stays in the Premier League is if he stays at Manchester City. If not, he goes to Barca. Superb player.”

Ilkay Gundogan unlikely to join Arsenal

We do not think that Ilkay Gundogan will move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Now, we have no doubt whatsoever that the German star would make Arsenal better and enhance their quality in the middle of the park.

However, it is hard to see Gundogan join another club in England after being so successful at City.

If the midfielder does leave the Citizens in the summer of 2023, then it is very likely that he will end up at Barcelona.
