The Argentine has not featured for Tottenham Hotspur for nearly five months.

The Times reported this morning that Spurs are ready to listen to offers for Erik Lamela, after the player and club shared a disagreement regarding the treatment for the Argentine’s ongoing injury problems.

The 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself since making his big money move to White Hart Lane from Roma in 2013, and is still yet to show the Tottenham faithful what he is truly capable of on a consistent enough basis.

But the question has to be asked, are Spurs about to make a big mistake by discarding Lamela at the wring time?

The mercurial forward has not featured for Mauricio Pochettino’s men since late October in an EFL Cup tie against Liverpool.

And there cannot be too many clubs who would be willing to take a risk on Lamela, especially with so much uncertainty surrounding his fitness.

Tottenham would certainly not be able to get anywhere near the £26 million that they paid for his services three-and-a-half years ago.

Obviously, it is only those inside the ropes of the club and Lamela’s inner-circle who are privy to the full extent of the former River Plate man’s problems.

But there is a case to be made for Spurs to stick by him through the worst of his trouble’s in the hope that he can either return to his best, or at least get to playing more regularly, and in turn, increase his value – he is under contract with the club until the summer of 2020 after all.

Lamela’s future at Tottenham will surely still depend on whether or not there is a conclusive diagnosis to his fitness problems, and of course whether anyone comes in with what would be deemed as an acceptable offer for his services.

And judging by the way things have gone recently, the latter seems to be like the more likely outcome.
