The Tottenham prodigy could get a chance next season if the stars align as they did for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United.
Of all Tottenham Hotspur’s exciting young players, 17-year-old Marcus Edwards is regarded as one of the very best.
The midfielder has impressed at every age-level to date and he made his debut for Spurs’ under-21s last season, finishing the campaign with five appearances and one assist.
While there is a long way to go, there is a chance Edwards could get his first-team debut as early as next season.
First off he will need to impress Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino during pre-season, when he is likely to be given the chance to train regularly with the senior side and potentially even play some part in pre-season friendlies.
In a quiet summer Edwards would have probably headed out with the under-21s, but the European Championships will see a whole host of Spurs players on international duty for weeks to come. That leaves Edwards and the like to have more chances to stand out.
Then there is the fact that some of Edwards’ older under-21 teammates could well be heading out on loan this summer.
While the 17-year-old is unlikely to be sent away temporarily just yet, the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters and Shayon Harrison may well be having clocked up the appearances for Tottenham’s second string.
That could see Edwards climb up the pecking order the same way Marcus Rashford did for Manchester United last season.
The new England international had not even played for his club’s under-21s when he got the call by manager Louis van Gaal, but he seized his chance and Edwards has the talent to do the same.
With Edwards’ Tottenham contract expiring next summer, the upcoming season is a big one for the teenager; and with four competitions to play for, do not be surprised if Pochettino has cause to call on his prodigy before May.
