Wanting your rivals to fail, and badly so, in the Premier League one week and then hoping they succeed the next is rarely practical – but there is one instance where Liverpool should want their title rivals to succeed.
The Champions League draw will be made this morning, and Chelsea and Manchester United will find out who awaits them.
It’s a competition Liverpool look likely to be part of next season, but there is still reason why they should care how Chelsea get on – and want them to do well, just for one round at least, and here’s why:
The timing of the semi-final, likely against a potential giant of European football such as Bayern Munich or Barcelona, would mean an extremely difficult task for Jose Mourinho in terms of keeping his squad fresh.
Liverpool meanwhile would have all week before hand to rest up ahead of the pivotal fixture, and not have to worry about another days later.
Even more so, if Chelsea play the away leg first, their players are likely to be more weary from travelling potentially miss time training.
Liverpool will already be favourites for the fixture, hoping for the terrific Anfield crowd to propel them towards the title, and this could swing it even more in their favour; as they pursue the title.
So Liverpool fans should certainly hope Jose Mourinho’s side get a favourable quarter-final draw against one of the ‘weaker’ sides left in the competition – Manchester United anyone?
