Why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem? Many have asked on Google as the Premier League tell clubs to play it ahead of King Charles III’s Coronation.

The Reds – as well as the other 19 Premier League sides – have been strongly encouraged to play God Save The King before their upcoming fixtures, while an article about the Coronation has been suggested for the matchday programmes.

That is according to the Daily Mail.

It puts Liverpool in a difficult position, as their supporters often boo the national anthem whenever it is played in their presence, such as at Wembley for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals last season.

So, why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem? Let’s take a look…

Why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem?

Well, Liverpool is a very left-leaning city who oppose the establishment.

Liverpool have also often been wronged by the Government – notably in the 1980s as a “managed decline” of the city was organised by Margaret Thatcher.

As shown by the BBC, Government files released at the time showed senior Tory ministers urging her not to spend public money on the “stony ground” of Merseyside.

The Government also failed to support Liverpool during the Hillsborough disaster, as Thatcher sided with the police and pointed the finger at innocent fans.

As the presence of food banks on Merseyside grows year by year – there are even some outside of Anfield and Goodison Park – these feelings of abandonment and inequality only increase amongst the people of Liverpool.

Prince William was also booed by supporters as he shook the hands of Liverpool players before July’s FA Community Shield clash against Manchester City at the King Power Stadium.

Therefore, we highly doubt that the Liverpool fans will be in any mood to celebrate King Charles III’s Coronation ahead of their game against Brentford at Anfield on Saturday.
