The Leeds United defender deserves a new long-term deal.
Much has been made of the future of Leeds United full-back Charlie Taylor, whose contract expires in the summer, but the situation regarding another Whites defender could ultimately be even more important.
Gaetano Berardi has returned from injury in blistering form, proving to be a vital part of Garry Monk’s side and covering for the injured Taylor. But with his current contract expiring in the summer of 2018, it would be wise to tie him down to a longer deal sooner rather than later.

The simple fact is Taylor’s future seems to be away from Elland Road, although promotion to the Premier League in May could change things.
However, whatever happens with Taylor, Berardi is a player Leeds need to keep for the long haul, with his ability to cover effectively at either side of the defence.

He may be 28, but he is the kind of player who – assuming Leeds are a top flight club next season – could easily impress potential suitors with his work rate, versatility and innate talent, meaning he would be an enticing free agent in little over a year.
Berardi is a Leeds fan favourite for good reason and while the club have on occasions bided their time when it comes to new contracts, they should put one under Berardi’s nose as soon as possible.
