Leeds United are considering West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan to be their next manager. But some club chiefs have doubts about him replacing the sacked Jesse Marsch.

That is according to the Daily Mail, which reports that some members of Leeds’ board see hiring Corberan as a return to the days of Marcelo Bielsa. Yet they believe the Elland Road natives should strive to move in a different direction than to resurrect the Argentine’s reign.

Leeds are seeking another manager in just under a year after sacking Marsch this Monday. The Whites fired the 49-year-old following a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Sunday to sit 17th in the Premier League. They are only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Corberan has emerged as the early frontrunner to be the next manager at Leeds after the Whites sacked Marsch. Senior figures at Elland Road appreciate the job the 39-year-old is doing at West Brom since taking charge last October. He also has previous ties with Leeds.

Leeds hired the Spaniard as their Under-21 boss back in July 2017 and employed him until July 2020. During that period, he also took up a role in Bielsa’s backroom team during the 67-year-old’s first-team tenure. Corberan left Leeds to take charge at Huddersfield Town.

Leeds board members are split on naming Carlos Corberan as their next manager

Corberan enhanced his reputation as a manager at Huddersfield after guiding the team to the Championship play-off final last term. He walked away from the John Smith’s Stadium after losing to Nottingham Forest. He then endured a tough and short spell at Olympiacos.

The Greek giants sacked the Spaniard after just 11 games and just over a month. But West Brom appreciated what Corberan managed at Huddersfield when they sought a successor for Steve Bruce. He took charge with the club 23rd in the Championship after 16 matches.

Yet West Brom now sit in sixth and in the play-off positions after 10 wins in 13 games with the Valencian in charge. Yet given Corberan’s relationship with Bielsa and how their bond has influenced his career, there is some division at Leeds on him being their next manager.

Some Leeds board members want to avoid returning to Bielsa’s ways by naming Corberan as their next manager. But all Elland Road chiefs agree they must find Marsch’s successor quickly. And Corberan, who Danny Cowley has called ‘outstanding’, is the early favourite.
