Leeds United are currently fourth in the Championship following their victory over Birmingham City on Friday night.

It does not take a genius to work out that Leeds are well on their way to enjoying, by far, their best season since Simon Grayson led the Whites to the cusp of the Championship play-off places back in 2011. But what may be less obvious is that with their victory over Birmingham City on Friday night, Garry Monk’s men passed a significant landmark in their season.

The 3-1 win at St Andrew’s kept Leeds fourth in the table, but it also took them onto 64 points for the year with 11 games to go.

Although the Elland Road faithful have been treated to some unspectacular, if not largely miserable, campaigns since Grayson’s exciting team disbanded, it may surprise them to know that Monk’s men have already now achieved a higher points tally than Leeds have managed in any of the previous five seasons.

They finished the 2011/12 and 2012/13 campaigns on 61 points and failed to break 60 in the three seasons since, which highlights what a tremendous job Monk has done since arriving last summer.

And the work he has done becomes all the more impressive when it is considered that the Whites have secured 60 of those points in the last 29 games, having made a terrible start to the campaign, winning just one of their first six league games.

While Monk will surely not be looking at the current tally in the same way – he will be keen for the players to not look at surpassing those totals as an achievement given that Leeds did not secure one top-half finish in that time – Leeds fans can surely take plenty of confidence from the fact that, with 11 games to go, they are already guaranteed to enjoy their best season for the past six years.
