Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left upset after Jan Vertonghen’s reaction to Pierre Emile Hojbjerg signing and taking the number five at Spurs.
Vertonghen wore the five shirt at Tottenham for a number of years, before departing this summer.
Hojbjerg will now take over the number at Hotspur Way, and Vertonghen admitted he found it ‘weird’ to see someone else’s name on the shirt.
Tottenham fans rushed to respond to Vertonghen, and there was widespread disappointment expressed over his departure after his tweet.
If Hojbjerg can even prove to be half as successful at Tottenham as Vertonghen was then he will be a great addition.
The Belgian defender ranks among the very finest players in his position that Tottenham have had in recent history.
Vertonghen was showing signs of age towards the end of his time at Spurs though, and it is not particularly surprising that the North London club opted not to extend his deal.
Vertonghen’s new club is not yet known, although he has been linked with a return to Holland by Goal.
