Why is there no Premier League football this weekend? Many have asked this on Google with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool not in top-flight action.

There will not be a single Premier League fixture taking place this weekend, with many under the impression that this was down to a winter break.

However, the usual winter break was swallowed up by the World Cup break, leaving many to wonder why Premier League football is not on.

So, why is there no Premier League football this weekend? Let’s take a look…

Why there is no Premier League football this weekend

Well, the Premier League makes way for FA Cup football this weekend.

The likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool will all be on domestic cup duty over the weekend as Premier League football takes a back seat until Friday 3rd February.

Chelsea vs Fulham at Stamford Bridge will be the first Premier League game after the break.

Interestingly, the Blues and other Premier League sides such as Crystal Palace and Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup at the third round.

Nevertheless, they must still sit out for a weekend with most Premier League sides still involved in the competition.

Clearly, it is easier for the FA to simply put the entire Premier League on hold while the FA Cup goes on, rather than attempt to squeeze in some top-flight fixtures and create an unbalanced schedule.

While that will frustrate some supporters, it comes as something of a positive for those in need of new signings.

A break from the Premier League this weekend gives recruitment staff more time to find an opportunity in the transfer market before the next top-flight outing, which could be the difference between a loss or a win.

Be sure to keep an eye on the FA Cup action, as there are some mouthwatering clashes – such as Arsenal vs Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Friday evening.
