Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero will line up for Argentina against France in the World Cup final but just why is he known as ‘Cuti’?
It comes down to this – one more game of the 2022 World Cup.
Argentina meet France in the final on Sunday afternoon with both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe chasing glory at the Lusail Stadium.
Those two players will steal the spotlight but some fans may be wondering about Cristian Romero’s nickname.

Why is Cristian Romero called Cuti?
Tottenham defender Romero is expected to line up in Argentina’s back line against Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and co.
Romero wasn’t exactly at his best in the opener against Saudi Arabia, looking unfit after weeks of being on the treatment table at Tottenham.
Lionel Scaloni even dropped Romero for the game against Mexico but he has forced his way back into the Argentina team.
Argentina will be looking for Romero to make a big impact defensively but one question may come up about him.
Why exactly is Romero known as ‘Cuti’?
Romero still wears his surname on the back of his shirt but you will see the name ‘Cuti’ everywhere with regards to Romero.
His Instagram handle is ‘cutiromero2′, it’s the same on Twitter and teammates often call him ‘Cuti’ rather than Cristian.
The explanation actually goes back to Romero’s childhood back in Argentina.
The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported in 2021 that ‘Cuti’ was the name given to him by his sister Aldana.
Romero allegedly couldn’t say Cristian at a young age and his sister just used ‘Cuti’ instead.
Romero may be 24 now – and we assume able to say Cristian properly – but he has kept that nickname throughout his professional career.
The defender will hope to end the weekend as a World Cup winner – and he will no doubt have his sister and the whole Tottenham fanbase behind him all the way.
