Newcastle United winger Gabriel Obertan has clearly struggled to recover from the injury he suffered earlier in the campaign.
Gabriel Obertan’s season has clearly been heavily impacted by the injury he picked up just as it looked as if he was coming into form.
Obertan suffered a serious thigh injury which kept him out for three months between November and February and it has ruined his chances of having a good year at St. James’ Park.
This season had looked to be make or break for Obertan and he may consider himself unfortunate to have had his opportunity to impress taken away by factors outside of his control.
The French winger was under pressure to step-up this campaign and he made a good start, with his performances over the opening months of the campaign suggesting that he may finally live up to his potential.
However, since he has returned from his thigh problem his standards have seriously dipped and he is nowhere near his best.
| Position | Team | Match | Goals | Shots per game | Chances created per game | Touches per game | Final Third Entries per game | Dribbles per game | Passes per game | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gabriel Obertan | MF | Newcastle | Before injury | 1 | 0.66 | 1.33 | 27 | 2.33 | 1.5 | 15.83 | 6 | 301 |
| Gabriel Obertan | MF | Newcastle | After injury | 0 | 0.25 | 0.75 | 25 | 1.25 | 0.5 | 14 | 4 | 193 |
The 26-year-old simply is not posing as much of a threat in any area, compared to what he was at the start of the campaign.
Over the early months of the season Obertan was dribbling regularly, he was having frequent shots and consistently getting into the opposition’s final third.
Now, he looks off the pace, with his performances ineffective since returning to action.
It means that there is likely to be question marks over his future in the summer and if Obertan is forced to leave he may reflect on this injury as the decisive factor which forced him out of Newcastle.
