Glasgow Rangers parted ways with Joey Barton much earlier this season, after a miserable time at Ibrox.

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in appointing Alan Irvine (Daily Express), as they search for Mark Warburton’s successor at Ibrox.

Warburton parted company with Rangers two weekends ago, and Irvine is reportedly on the Glasgow side’s radar.

If Irvine does become Rangers’ next manager, he is likely to be glad that Joey Barton left Ibrox earlier this season, after a public spat the pair had back in 2014.

After Barton’s Queens Park Rangers side beat West Brom, who were managed by Irvine at the time, the central midfielder launched an attack on the Baggies.

He said to the Daily Mail: “They don’t know how to win games and – excuse the language – they’ll s*** themselves.

“They don’t know how to get over the finishing line.”

The comments angered Irvine, who fired back at Barton in no uncertain terms, and used them as motivation for his side for the remainder of the season.

He said: “Joey will know why he said it. I’m not going to pin his comments on the dressing room wall, but I am sure the lads are aware of it. Who knows, maybe we might use it next time we play them.”

Barton, of course, is no stranger to controversy and his move to Rangers did not work out at all.

The central-midfielder never found form at Ibrox, and an argument with Andy Halliday was the beginning of the end for him in Scotland.

Barton was with Rangers for just a few months, before his contract was terminated and he went back to Burnley.
