According to the Daily Mail, Everton are working on a deal to bring Depay to Goodison Park, and it could be a very clever move.
Everton want to agree a price for Depay in January, and then sign the winger up until the end of the season.
The transfer effectively gives Everton a chance to ‘try before they buy’ and makes the move a very low risk one.
When Depay moved to Manchester United he was regarded as one of the best talents in Europe, but he has not shown his best form at Old Trafford.
Depay does have talent, though, and a move away from the Red Devils could be all that it takes to reignite the youngster’s career.
If Depay does show his top form for Everton he will be a shrewd investment, and with the Toffees agreeing a price for him before the loan, it leaves United in little position to negotiate an expensive fee.
If Depay thrives at Everton, then Koeman could strike a bargain – but if he fails the Toffees will have lost little.
Everton would be under no obligation to buy Depay, if he didn’t turn out to be a success, and it is not like it is imperative that he hits the ground running.
Everton already have good options on the wings, and could cope without Depay with ease.
However, if he turns out to be a major hit, then Everton will have yet another top, young talent to add to the collection of exciting prospects they already have at Goodison Park.
