Arteta has been tipped as Pep Guardiola’s successor at Man City, but the Toffees arguably need him more, and sooner.

Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta talks to Fernandinho during a Manchester City training session at Manchester City Football Academy on November 26, 2018 in Manchester, England.

Mikel Arteta is thought of very highly at several clubs in England – you won’t find very many Everton, Arsenal or Manchester City fans with bad things to say about him.

Now assistant manager at Manchester City, the Spaniard was heavily linked with the Gunners job in the summer, though some supporters did think he didn’t have enough experience to succeed Arsene Wenger.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Arteta is in pole position to succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium in the future, though this is not expected to be any time soon.

The article features interviews with the likes of author Marti Perarnau, who “knows the Guardiola camp well”, and former City assistant and current New York City FC boss Domenec Torrent, who give their thoughts on how Arteta is doing with the Citizens.

In addition, the report states that the 36-year-old is understood to have bought a house in Manchester, reinforcing the belief that he is being groomed to be Guardiola’s successor when the Catalan calls it a day.

However, one of his former clubs appears in more pressing need of a ‘prospective new Pep’ and, given their current circumstances and Arteta’s increasing stock as a coach, should consider moving for him if they decide not to stick with Silva.

Despite considerable investment by Farhad Moshiri, Everton are not exactly pulling up trees at present, and current manager Marco Silva appears to be on thin ice at the club, with just two Premier League wins so far this year.

Should Moshiri decide to part ways with Silva, he could pitch the Toffees job to Arteta as follows – aside from it being a club with which he has emotional ties and which he knows inside out, it’s also got a good budget, ambitions for Europe, a new stadium on the horizon, and he wouldn’t even have to uproot his family from Manchester.

In Arteta, Everton would get a young, ambitious coach who is very much in the Guardiola mould, who the fans adore and who could potentially propel the club to new heights as he moulds the team to his philosophy.
