The Toffees midfielder’s absence was felt in their 6-2 loss to Spurs and letting him leave in January could well leave the side woefully exposed.

Most Everton fans will surely be feeling a little nervous about how their team is doing following their 6-2 home hammering at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Toffees appeared especially vulnerable in midfield, with Tom Davies and Andre Gomes struggling to cope with Spurs playing through them time and time again.

Whoscored highlights how Tottenham delivered six successful through-balls, testament to the ease with which they cut through the opposition, while their 616 passes in total puts Everton’s 439 to shame.

If Everton should take heed of any lesson from this game, it is to do all they can to keep Idrissa Gueye at Goodison Park this season, given how much they have missed him when unavailable.

The 29-year-old defensive midfielder has missed just three Premier League games this season – Huddersfield in September, Manchester City earlier this month and Spurs last time out – and in each of these, they have failed to win (Transfermarkt).

Gueye’s breaking up of opposition play would likely have made the difference against Spurs, or at least stopped them from racking up such an emphatic scoreline, but with rumours surrounding the Senegalese’s future, there is the danger he could be gone in January.

According to Sky Sports News, Paris Saint-Germain are looking into the prospect of snapping up Gueye, and if the reports are true, the Toffees will need to fight with every ounce of their strength to ensure he doesn’t leave mid-season, or as shown by the Spurs loss, the consequences could be dire as the team’s belly would be so exposed.
