Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe personally wanted to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
The report has claimed that Newcastle were keen on bringing the Manchester United and Scotland international midfielder to St. James’ Park last month.
The Magpies reportedly held conversations over a move for the £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) 26-year-old.
Newcastle boss Howe is ‘an admirer of the midfielder’s ball-carrying ability’, according to the report, which has added that the Magpies remain keen on McTominay and could try to sign him in the summer of 2023.

And while Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro is doing extremely well now, Ten Hag needs options.
However, McTominay could be sold at the end of the season for a good transfer fee.
The 26-year-old himself could be tempted to switch to Newcastle, especially if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
