Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe personally wanted to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
The report has claimed that Newcastle were keen on bringing the Manchester United and Scotland international midfielder to St. James’ Park last month.
The Magpies reportedly held conversations over a move for the £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) 26-year-old.
Newcastle boss Howe is ‘an admirer of the midfielder’s ball-carrying ability’, according to the report, which has added that the Magpies remain keen on McTominay and could try to sign him in the summer of 2023.
Could Newcastle sign Manchester United’s Scott McTominay in 2023 summer?

In our view, Newcastle United could be able to sign Scott McTominay from Premier League rivals Manchester United in the summer of 2023, especially if they finish in the top four.
Now, the Red Devils were never really going to offload the Scotland international in the middle of the season.
After all, Erik ten Hag’s side are aiming to finish in the UEFA Champions League places in the Premier League table this season.
And while Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro is doing extremely well now, Ten Hag needs options.
However, McTominay could be sold at the end of the season for a good transfer fee.
The 26-year-old himself could be tempted to switch to Newcastle, especially if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
