Why dropping Szczesny is the worst thing Wenger could do

Rumours are circulating that Arsene Wenger will drop Wojciech Szczesny this evening.

Several reports have suggested that Wojciech Szczesny will be dropped this evening when Arsenal host Swansea city at the Emirates.

The Gunners will be looking to bounce back from that heavy defeat they suffered at Chelsea last weekend and the Pole is one person who is reportedly going to have to make way following the loss.

“Boss Arsene Wenger is understood to be considering axing the goalkeeper and playing Lukasz Fabianski in his place for the visit of Swansea tomorrow. Szczesny did not even dive when Andre Schurrle scored the Blues’ second goal on Saturday and also flapped when Oscar scored the fifth,” reports the Daily Star.

Lukasz Fabianski has been superb whenever he’s been called upon this season but there are some main reasons as to why it would be a bad idea for Wenger to drop his current number one.

Szczesny, like many other players, is a person who thrives on confidence and his morale could be badly damaged if he’s confined to the subs bench.

He’s one of the best performing goalkeepers this season when it comes to key areas such as saves, punches and claiming the ball, which suggests he doesn’t deserve to be dropped after one poor display.

Bear in mind this is a goalkeeper who has been forced to deal with questions over his number one status at Arsenal throughout his career.

There were serious question marks hanging over whether he had the ability to be the sort of goalkeeper Arsenal needed him to be and dropping him could prompt him to start doubting himself and his ability.

Szczesny also has to contend with transfer rumours son a regular basis which link several top flight and top quality shot stoppers with moves to North London.

There could well be some spin offs from the rumour mill if he’s dropped, opening up those questions over his position and it could get inside his head if he reads about someone like Victor Valdes being linked with the club while he’s not in the team.

Wenger has two options; he can drop Szczesny, which could turn out to be a bad idea or he can keep him in the side, giving him the opportunity to produce a dominant and efficient 90 minutes of Swansea, allowing him to build hat confidence back up.
