With LeBron’s historic run under threat due to new league rules and missed games, Draymond Green questions whether the Lakers star should push himself to keep the streak alive.

LeBron James is already breaking records in his 23rd NBA season, becoming the first player ever to reach that milestone. His debut this year even drew comparisons to Magic Johnson’s prime as he orchestrated the Lakers’ offense with ease.

But despite settling in quickly with Los Angeles’ revamped roster, one of the most remarkable streaks in NBA history is now in jeopardy. LeBron has earned an All-NBA selection for 21 consecutive years — and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green believes that run may finally end in 2025–26.

Beginning in the 2023–24 season, the NBA introduced a 65-game minimum to qualify for end-of-season honors. LeBron has already missed 14 games due to a sciatica issue, and the toughest stretch of the schedule still lies ahead. For Green, that combination makes the streak almost impossible to maintain.

“You’re talking one of the most incredible streaks in NBA history,” Green said on his podcast. “It seems like it’s going to be broken… because I can’t imagine the Lakers are going to play LeBron in all the back-to-backs.”

With only three more missed games allowed under the new rules, losing the streak is a real possibility. Green added: “They’ve played 15 games, meaning they have 67 left. He needs to play [64] of the next [67] games.”

Green did acknowledge that if anyone could defy expectations, it would be James — but the challenge remains enormous.

Green calls playing 65 games “insane,” but wouldn’t put it past LeBron

Throughout his career, James has repeatedly overcome obstacles that would derail most players. Still, Green believes asking a nearly 41-year-old superstar to push through 64 of the final 67 games would be extraordinary.

“I think that would be insane,” he said. “But it would also be a testament to who he is. I wouldn’t be shocked if he actually went for it.”

Green concluded by saying it wouldn’t surprise him if LeBron attempted to protect the streak — even if he doesn’t see the Lakers prioritizing it.

With James approaching his 41st birthday, the question now becomes whether he’s willing to sacrifice rest and potentially affect his championship hopes just to preserve one of the greatest individual streaks in NBA history.
