Speaking on Sky Sports News (31/8 10:15PM), Paul Merson has been speaking about the Director of Football role at Arsenal, offering himself and Tony Adams up as two potential options.
It’s no secret that Edu is under pressure at the Emirates, he’s made a number of transfer blunders, and if reports are to be believed, he could be on thin ice.
Merson believes the Gunners need to appoint someone who loves the club.
What’s been said?
Merson was ranting about Arsenal’s current situation when it was put to him that he should become the Director of Football.
“What about Paul Merson – Director of Football,” Kris Boyd joked.
“I tell you what I’d do a better job. Kris I would, I’ll tell you know I would, I would put myself in there. I’m not asking a lot,” Merson said.
“I’d do it for nothing. I’d want Tony Adams there with me though. Why not Tony Adams? He loves the club he knows the club, why don’t they get someone in like that?”

Need more than passion
As romantic as it may be to bring Adams or Merson back to Arsenal in this role, we can’t say it’s incredibly wise.
Let’s not forget that Edu himself is something of an Arsenal legend, and he will have a similar passion for the club as Merson and Adams.
In a Director of Football role you need more than just passion, it’s a job that required a lot of brain work and tough negotiating, and it’s a job Adams and Merson have never done.
Adams is of course a relatively accomplished manager, but the 54-year-old has never been a Director of Football.
Perhaps someone like Marc Overmars, who has been working in this role at Ajax, would be a better choice.
