The managers can come and go at Manchester United, but one of the biggest reasons behind the club’s decline has been the recruitment.
From Louis van Gaal to Erik ten Hag, not many players that have been signed since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement can call themselves a success at Manchester United.
When it comes to the players of today, Ian Wright has questioned the club’s call to sign Antony, Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount.
The legendary striker shared how these signings haven’t worked and the question needs to be asked ‘who is making these decisions?, as he told Premier League Productions (04/03/24 at 2:15 pm).
This comes after Manchester United’s derby day defeat at the Etihad, with Mason Mount still injured and the other two coming off the bench.
When it comes to Sofyan Amrabat, his deal is a loan until the end of the season, so he will simply return to Fiorentina in the summer.
The defensive-minded midfielder is a prime example of never bring in someone off the back of the World Cup because youngster Kobbie Mainoo is now outshining him.
Either way, Ian Wright spoke about Manchester United’s recruitment under Erik ten Hag, with the much-criticised Antony, injury-prone Mason Mount and loan capture Sofyan Amrabat all coming under fire.
Manchester United’s transfers
“You have to look at, is this the manager to take them to the next level?”’ asked Wright.
“If you are looking at it now, I still don’t know what their main structure of play is. You can’t buy players like Antony and it doesn’t work. Amrabat coming in and it doesn’t work. Why did you buy Mason Mount?
“So, you are looking at players they have bought, just those three and you are thinking to yourself ‘who is making those decisions?’ Those things don’t happen at Man City, of course, they don’t. They have an unbelievable management team.”

Trust in Erik ten Hag
The key thing here is that the powers at Manchester United either back the manager or boot him out as soon as possible.
There is no point going into the summer, backing ten Hag all the way, and then firing him after ten matches of the following season.
But that’s something the former Ajax boss simply can’t worry about now because his team are 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the table and they have the small matter of facing Liverpool in the FA Cup.
You imagine a lot will be riding on that game, not just because of who it’s against, but the fact that a trophy might be the only thing that saves ten Hag from the chop.
