With the January transfer window in full swing, the rumours are abound regarding West Ham United’s interest in Sunderland star Jermain Defoe.
It’s fair to say that Jermain Defoe is leading from the front in terms of English strikers this season. The veteran is defying all the odds with some of the performances he’s been putting in as of late, and the sheer quantity of goals the former England international has been firing in makes for fine viewing for both Sunderland fans and neutrals everywhere.

However, the fairytale could come to an end dependent on whether or not the Black Cats accept West Ham’s offer for the in-form striker. Defoe, who spent five years at Upton Park towards the start of his career, could benefit greatly from a move further up the table.
The London-born forward may be open to the chance to return to his roots, and whilst he’s enjoying his time up in Sunderland you’d have to imagine that the location doesn’t hold a candle to playing in your home city.

Plus, it may be the final chance Defoe has to find some real success. Whilst the Hammers likely won’t break into Europe this season, the infrastructure is there to succeed within the next twelve months. The stadium, the quality of talent around Defoe and the general targets the club possess must appeal to the former Spurs man.
After all, Defoe has essentially been playing with no service around him yet has still managed to shoot up the goalscoring charts this season. When it comes to moving on to pastures new, the Olympic Stadium may be the best possible destination for him.
