The Newcastle United striker has recently been linked with a move to Derby County and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After winning promotion to the Premier League, Newcastle United are likely to undertake somewhat of a reshuffle when it comes to their playing squad. The Magpies recruited well last summer, forming a side that was ready-built to conquer the Championship, but will need to change things up if they want to survive in the top flight.
And one player who may well be set for the exit door is 34-year-old stirker, Daryl Murphy. The forward, who signed last summer from Ipswich Town, has already been linked with a move away from St James Park by The Chronicle, with Derby County and Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly admirers.
However, the former of these two clubs, would be wise to avoid any possible deal. After a disappointing season under three different managers, Derby County are looking to rebuild their squad under Gary Rowett this summer, with a major overhaul of the players expected.
With a number of players expected to both leave and join the Rams this summer, it’s no real surprise to see Murphy linked with the club. However, with Matej Vydra, Darren Bent, David Nugent and the returning Chris Martin all on the books, what would Daryl Murphy offer to this side that any of these strikers don’t?

The players age will also come up as something of a concern for the Rams. Derby already have two strikers over the age of 30 (Nugent and Bent) and are unlikely to be keen on bringing in another 30+ player. Gary Rowett has also spoken recently of his admiration for younger, hungrier players, as opposed to tried and tested ones.
And with the wage bill at Derby County looking to be reduced, rather than increased, it’s hard to see how Daryl Murphy fits into this side. The striker is likely on big wages at Newcastle United, and possibly out of Derby County’s price range, considering the changes they want to make to their playing squad.
Overall, it is good to see Derby County being linked with players. Their side has underachieved in recent years, and is due a reshuffle. However, should the Rams move for a centre-forward, it will likely not be Murphy.
