The Newcastle United man has been linked with a summer switch to Aston Villa.

According to a report from the Irish Sun, Aston Villa are preparing a bid for Newcastle United player Daryl Murphy, and the striker would be the perfect summer signing for Steve Bruce’s side.

Murphy was a somewhat surprising addition to the Magpies’ squad last summer, and he would go on to struggle for game time – in part due to injury – finishing the campaign with six goals in 18 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s table-toppers.

He may be 34, but Murphy has the innate talent to score for fun in the second tier and he could be the difference as Villa look to make it second time lucky when it comes to Championship promotion.

The Republic of Ireland international will no doubt be chomping at the bit to prove his worth at a new club next season and, with Newcastle willing to sanction a deal, Villa should be leading the queue for his services.

Bruce cannot afford to make it three straight seasons out of the top flight and having made plenty of additions in January, it is time he added the players that can supplement his current Villa stars and fight their way out of Europe’s toughest league.

Murphy is the man to help and if he can replicate his form from two years ago, when he scored 27 Championship goals for former club Ipswich Town, Villa could well do what Newcastle did this season, earning the veteran striker his second successive league winner’s medal in the process.
