Darren Fletcher sought Sir Alex Ferguson before accepting Manchester United interim job for one key reason.
Manchester United have entered yet another period of change, with club legend Darren Fletcher taking over as interim manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Fletcher steps in ahead of upcoming fixtures against Burnley and Brighton, tasked with steadying the ship and restoring some stability.

Darren Fletcher turned to Alex Ferguson before accepting Manchester United role
Before taking the job, Darren Fletcher made a call to the one man whose opinion still matters more than most around Old Trafford — Sir Alex Ferguson.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Fletcher explained that he reached out to his former manager before accepting the interim position. Ferguson, who was in attendance for Amorim’s final game — a 1-1 draw at Leeds — provided the assurance Fletcher needed to step in.
“I don’t like to make any major decisions without speaking to Sir Alex. I wanted to get his blessing, to be perfectly honest with you.
“I think he deserves that respect. I wanted to run it by him, and he echoed my thoughts.”
Fletcher added that the conversation reinforced his belief in serving the club’s best interests, describing Ferguson’s advice as both comforting and motivating.
The interim boss will now attempt to guide a squad in transition while carrying the weight of his mentor’s legacy.
From Alex Ferguson’s pupil to Old Trafford leader
Fletcher spent 13 years under Ferguson, making 342 appearances and winning 13 major honours, including five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.
His ties to United are even stronger today — both his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, are progressing through the club’s academy.
The 41-year-old has since held a range of roles at United, from youth coach to technical director, before stepping in to lead the first team.
Fletcher admitted he hasn’t had much time to speak with all the players since his appointment, but has already held meetings with captain Bruno Fernandes and new signings Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
As Fletcher prepares for his first game in charge against Burnley, his journey has come full circle. Once a teenager nurtured by Ferguson, he now steps into his mentor’s shadow — not as a player, but as a manager tasked with restoring some of the old Manchester United spirit.
