England’s Daniel Sturridge scores their first goal
There is something of an anxiety whenever Daniel Sturridge goes away on international duty among Liverpool fans. Many will remember that his succession of injuries started in the 2014/15 season when he went away on international duty in September of that season – and would only return to action again in January.
Sturridge has struggled to nail down a place in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side this season. Despite the labels of him being a selfish player at times, he has worked very well for the team. He was impressive in the win over Leicester City, led the line well in a win over Chelsea and slotted seemlessly into the attack when replacing Adam Lallana against Swansea City.
In all of those games, he has yet to find the net. The only goal so far this season have been a double in the second round of the EFL Cup at Burton Albion – where Liverpool were 5-0 winners against Championship opposition.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge scores their fifth goal
Gareth Southgate handed Sturridge a start for England’s game against Malta, and the forward took his opportunity to well, guiding home a cross from Jordan Henderson to open the scoring in their 2-0 win in their World Cup qualification campaign.
Getting minutes under his belt keeps him match fit, getting on the scoresheet shows there’s some form going into a big period for the Reds.
England’s Daniel Sturridge celebrates scoring their first goal
Sturridge could well be featuring for the games immediately after the international break – starting with Manchester United at home given the injury sustained by Lallana at Swansea, with Philippe Coutinho likely to drop back into a more central midfield role.
While everyone associated with the Reds hopes he comes back fit, they will be pleased that he would return with a goal under his belt, and a bit more confidence.
