Eric Bieniemy’s return to the Kansas City Chiefs has been defined less by playbooks and schemes and more by relationships, with football deliberately taking a back seat in his early conversations with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

After spending some time away from the organization, the veteran coach is back in familiar surroundings, reconnecting with players he helped guide through some of the most successful seasons in franchise history.

Rather than rushing into tactical discussions, Bieniemy has focused on reestablishing trust and energy inside the building.

Eric Bieniemy explains approach with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce

Speaking in a clip shared by KC Sports Network, Bieniemy described how his initial interactions with Mahomes and Kelce have unfolded since his return.

“You know what, I’ve had just a small, minimal conversation with both. They’ve all been great. But more than anything, it’s just the excitement of reuniting. … To be honest, I’ve not talked any football or anything,” the Chiefs OC said.

The approach reflects Bieniemy’s belief that chemistry and connection matter just as much as Xs and Os, particularly with veterans who already understand the system.

His focus has been on rebuilding momentum after time apart rather than forcing immediate tactical alignment.

Eric Bieniemy’s return brings familiarity back to Kansas City

Bieniemy previously served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, overseeing an offense that won two Super Bowls and became one of the most productive units in the NFL.

He left Kansas City in 2023 to join the Chicago Bears, seeking a new challenge and broader responsibilities after years of external interest in his head coaching prospects.

“It’s just the excitement of just seeing each other, asking how they’re doing. … Is the excitement high? Yes. Am I fired up? Yes.

“Do I respect the hell out of both of those guys? Yes. So I’m looking forward to getting back in the grind and chopping wood with them,” Bieniemy added.

With shared history and mutual respect already in place, Bieniemy’s presence offers continuity as the Chiefs look to re-establish their offensive identity.
