Chelsea have begun making their transfer plans for the summer as the season comes to its conclusion and the links are coming thick and fast.

The Blues have added Morgan Rogers to their shortlist as Enzo Maresca looks to improve his squad for next season.

Rogers has been a consistent performer for Aston Villa this season and starred for the Villains in their Champions League campaign.

The England international spoken positively about Maresca previously, having worked together for Manchester City Under-23 side, alongside Chelsea star Cole Palmer.

While the signing of one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League is a hugely exciting prospect for Maresca and Chelsea fans alike, it is not good news for everyone, particularly one important squad member.

Morgan Rogers’ arrival is bad news for Jadon Sancho at Chelsea

When a player is signed that usually is bad news for players in their position and in this instance it is Jadon Sancho who may be the unlucky one.

Chelsea signed Sancho on loan from Manchester United with an obligation to buy him for £25m this summer.

But Sancho’s transition to life at Stamford Bridge has hardly been smooth and it has been rumoured that The Blues may even opt out of the obligation at a cost of £5m.

Rogers, who has scored against Chelsea both for Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, offers Maresca more flexibility, which as we have seen with Moises Caicedo starring at right back, he is very keen on.

Whilst primarily an attacking midfielder, the 22-year-old has also starred both on the left and right and even played as the centre forward for Villa this season, making him the perfect utility attacker for Maresca.

Conversely, Sancho has largely played at left wing with a few appearances at right wing but has struggled to make an impact at times and the Chelsea manager has not ruled out his departure.

How Rogers could revolutionise Chelsea’s main weakness next season

One thing Chelsea have lacked this season, particularly since the turn of the year, is goals from their attacking players.

Marc Cucurella remains the joint-top scorer in the Premier League for The Blues in 2025 and although Nicolas Jackson finally put an end to his drought in the 1-0 win over Everton, goals from the front four remain a concern.

Sancho himself has netted only once in all competitions since January, while other attackers, including Palmer have struggled to score goals but his close friend Rogers has remained in top form.

Of the Villa starlet’s 14 goals, eight have come in the Premier League, along with nine assists in 33 matches, compared to Sancho, who has three goals and five assists in 28 games for The Blues this season.

With Rogers a key target for Chelsea, Sancho’s turbulent career may be about to take another turn should Maresca decide to part ways with the winger.
