Celtic manager must convince Timothy Castagne he can develop his career.
Celtic are hoping to sign Atalanta defender Timothy Castagne, The Mail report.
Castagne is a right-back who recently made his Belgium debut.
He did so in Scotland at Hampden Park in a 4-0 win for Belgium.
Castagne would be an excellent signing for Celtic as a long term replacement for Mikael Lustig.
It won’t be easy though even if the clubs can agree a fee, and it will largely depend on Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
Castagne has made impressive progress since signing for Atalanta in 2017.
He has become a Belgium international and he will need some assurance that the move is right for his career.
Rodgers has a key role, especially considering how highly Castagne regards his current boss Gian Piero Gasperini.
Castagne credited Gasperini as key to his success, telling Tuttomercatoweb earlier this season: “I think the experience so far at Atalanta was very important, also because of my level of play, here I learned a lot and without the Atalanta and without the teachings of Mr. Gasperini, I would not be in the national team.”
The right-back will know he will be taking a gamble leaving Atalanta, wherever he goes.
Brendan Rodgers must persuade the Belgian that he can have the same positive effect on his career, and that leaving Serie A is the right move.
If Castagne is not impressed with Rodgers, he won’t be in a rush to leave.
