Ashley Williams is available on a Bosman – why don’t Celtic and Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers go for him?

Celtic and Rangers should both be in the market for centre-backs this summer.

Dedryck Boyata has already left the Hoops and Filip Benkovic probably won’t be coming back, while the same applies to Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall at Ibrox.

Both Celtic and Rangers only have a couple of reliable centre-half options as things stand, but that isn’t enough – and should the Old Firm outfits consider Ashley Williams?

Everton confirmed on Friday that the Wales international would not be getting a new deal at Goodison Park.

This is a player with 85 caps for his country and nearly 250 Premier League appearances under his belt.

Ordinarily the Glasgow giants would have to spend a fair bit of money on someone with those credentials, but Williams is absolutely free.

Gers fans might argue that McAuley was also free, and also vastly experienced, and look how that panned out, but Williams isn’t 39. He is 34 and although he’s no longer good enough for the Premier League, he’s definitely good enough for Scotland.

Wages might be an issue, with the big defender earning £70,000 per week at Goodison [Spotrac], but no matter where he goes he’ll struggle to continue earning that money.

If it’s feasible, this is a player Celtic and Rangers should certainly consider.
