Why Carlos Alcaraz’s coach still isn’t in the Hall of Fame, even with a Grand Slam title

Juan Carlos Ferrero has not been invited into the exclusive club that is the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

He’s been with Alcaraz since 2019, guiding him to six Grand Slam titles before he even turned 23. It’s a remarkable partnership that continues to shape the future of the sport.

Ferrero reached World No.1 and picked up a major title along the way, but there’s still a reason why he hasn’t been added to tennis’ most exclusive club.

What has kept Ferrero out of the Hall of Fame?

Juan Carlos Ferrero’s career included 16 titles, highlighted by a French Open win and four Masters 1000 victories.

Alongside his sole Grand Slam triumph in 2003, he also reached two more major finals.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame has a rule that players must be out of the sport for at least five years before they can be considered for induction.

Ferrero stepped away from tennis in 2012 and was put forward as one of three nominees nine years later.

Induction requires at least 75% approval from an Official Voting Group made up of journalists, historians and industry figures, along with any extra percentage points from fan voting.

The vote isn’t competitive – it’s affirmative – so players are seeking support rather than going head-to-head against each other for a single spot. It’s about getting enough backing from those voting groups to meet the threshold.

How many players have been rejected from the Tennis Hall of Fame in the last decade?

It has now been confirmed that Roger Federer will headline the 2026 Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion set to take his place in Newport next year. But not everyone on this year’s ballot enjoyed the same outcome.

Juan Martín del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova both fell short of the 75% voting threshold and were not inducted, joining a growing list of notable stars who have been rejected at least once. Both will return to the nominee list next year, hoping to follow the path of Goran Ivanišević and Conchita Martínez — two players who were inducted just a year after initially missing out.

Over the past 10 years, a total of 17 players have been rejected by the Tennis Hall of Fame, though several eventually earned entry. Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Mary Pierce, for instance, were denied in 2015 but accepted four years later. Helena Suková, famous for ending Martina Navratilova’s 74-match winning streak, was inducted two years after her first nomination.

The 2026 International Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Newport, Rhode Island, from August 27–29.
